HSE Master of Data Science Programme Is among Finalists of Digital Learning 2022
The HSE's Master of Data Science programme reached the final of the Digital Learning 2022 Award in the online programmes category, as well as winning the audience award. HSE was the only university to reach the final. Nominees from the world of business competed side by side with the first English-language master's programme in Russia implemented entirely online.
The award aims to recognise and promote the best practices in the use of digital technologies and modern approaches in teaching. The awards committee includes Pavel Bezyaev, leader and co—founder of the Digital Learning community, Dmitry Yakushev, course developer at Gazprombank, Victoria Savitskaya, leading specialist at the LUKOIL-Inter-Card Corporate Competence Center, and Ruslan Lelays, Head of e-Learning SRG.
In addition to online programmes, Digital Learning 2022 evaluates online courses and blended programmes.
Along with HSE University , other award participants included SBER, Sibur, Russian Railways, Roskomnadzor, RusHydro, Rostelecom, and Redmond, as well as many others
The works were assessed in two rounds from October 15th to October 25th according to the following criteria:
relevance of the chosen approach (concept, formats, tools);
implementation (methodology, technical components, design);
result (evaluation of the training effectiveness).
In the first round, participants in the award voted, selecting the top 3 in each of the categories, while in the second round, the jury determined the winners. The jury included experts in corporate and academic training, as well as specialists from the field of EdTech.
The English-language Master of Data Science programme is a digital breakthrough by the university. The project has been implemented with the support of the eLearning Office, and was the first online programme presented on the international platform in February 2020. With the support of ‘Yandex’, the programme’s industry partner, it brings together students from over 30 countries.
Yulia Remezova
‘The launch of Russia's first online programme is not only a unique digital case that has set a new trend in the Russian higher education market and stimulated universities to develop integrated academic products for platforms,’ says Yulia Remezova, Director of HSE eLearning Office. ‘The programme allowed the global student community to learn more about the expertise and developments of Russian universities. Now you can get a degree online, studying at a leading university in the Russian Federation from anywhere in the world. We are glad that the professional community has recognized our achievements.’
Margarita Burova
‘Our programme helps specialists in any field to expand their background in data analysis or get new skills without any prior training and distraction from their professional activity,’ says Margarita Burova, academic supervisor of the Master of Data Science programme. ‘Our students can develop their career in parallel with their studies, and create their individual curriculum. At the same time, such training is just as good, if not better, than fully-fledged offline education; something which can be considered an absolute breakthrough.’
The programme includes 3 tracks:
A Data Scientist is a machine learning specialist capable of solving both traditional business tasks (demand forecasting, outflow prediction, text data analysis, segmentation, etc.) and modern formulations (building question answering systems, image analysis, generation of realistic examples, etc.).
A Machine Learning Engineer is a specialist at the intersection of data science and development who understands and applies modern technologies for collecting, storing and analyzing large amounts of data, and is able to write effective code and design complex systems related to machine learning services.
A Researcher in DS is a machine learning specialist familiar with state-of-the-art results who understands the theoretical foundations of machine learning and can improve existing methods.
The programme combines theory with intensive practice: all the acquired skills are applied to real projects and tasks from the industry.
Enrolment for the Master of Data Science programme is underway, with the course starting in March 2023.
